Updated October 2026. Every provider fact below was checked on that provider's own website on 2 October 2026.
The best virtual number services for OTP depend on what you are verifying: a strict app that rejects VoIP needs a real-SIM number, a one-off test can use something cheaper, and a long-term account needs a number you can keep. This list covers ten services, what each says about itself, and who each one suits. We run NumberOTP, which is on the list, so we explain exactly how we judged. NumberOTP is an independent service and is not affiliated with any other provider named here.
Our Top Picks at a Glance
Pick by the job you need done, because no single service is best at everything. This is our shortlist; the sections below give the facts behind each choice.
- Best all-round for many countries and real-SIM numbers: NumberOTP.
- Best for US-only numbers on strict apps: TextVerified.
- Best for teams and OTP testing: SMSPool.
- Best for a free trial before you pay: OnlineSIM.
- Very low listed starting prices and big catalogs: 5sim and HeroSMS.
- Best free option for low-stakes tests: Temp-Number.
How We Judged These Services
We compared only what each service states publicly, and we did not score success rates. No one publishes independently audited success rates for verification numbers, so any percentage you see online is a claim, not a measurement.
For each service we looked for the same six things on its own site:
- Number type: does it say the numbers are real-SIM or non-VoIP?
- Price: does it publish a starting price or a calculator?
- Refund: does it say what happens if no SMS arrives?
- Coverage: countries and services it claims.
- Rentals: can you keep a number for days or months?
- API: is there a developer interface?
Where a page did not state something, we say "not stated", which is not the same as "not offered". One service we wanted to include, SMS-Man, blocked our automated check, so we left it out rather than guess. Terms change, so confirm details on each site before you pay.

The 10 Services in Detail
1. NumberOTP: best all-round for real-SIM numbers across many countries
NumberOTP gives you private, real SIM-backed non-VoIP numbers for per-activation verification, with an automatic refund if no SMS arrives. You see the exact price for your app and country before you confirm, and the pricing page lists popular pairs, such as Google plus India, at roughly $0.10 to $0.30. Coverage is 150+ countries and 800+ platforms, there is a REST API with rentals, and new accounts get $0.10 in free credit. The trade-off: it is a pay-per-use service, so there is no free public pool. You can see how it differs from VoIP in our guide to real SIM vs VoIP numbers.
2. TextVerified: best for US numbers on strict apps
TextVerified describes its numbers as real US mobile lines backed by physical SIMs, not VoIP, and says it supports 1,900+ services. It lists verifications from $0.25, short-term rentals of 1 to 14 days from $1.50 and long-term rentals from $5 per month, with a refund if you do not receive the message or call. It also lists an API and card or cryptocurrency payment. The trade-off is scope: its numbers are US-based, so it does not help if you need another country.
3. SMSPool: best for teams and OTP testing
SMSPool presents itself around OTP testing, shared team numbers and keeping your personal number private. It states that it is a registered Dutch company, offers non-VoIP long-term rentals and a documented REST API, and says most OTPs arrive in under 10 seconds. It publishes a pricing calculator instead of a single starting price. Its homepage does not state a refund policy, so read the terms before topping up.
4. OnlineSIM: best for trying a free number first
OnlineSIM offers 15-minute single-use numbers, long-term rentals and a separate module of free temporary numbers, across 110+ countries and 1,000+ services, and it lists an API. It states that if a message does not arrive you can close the number and order another without being debited. It shows exact prices only after you choose a country, and it does not say whether its paid numbers are real-SIM.
5. 5sim: widest catalog and a very low listed starting price
5sim advertises numbers from around 180 countries, more than 1,300 services and pricing that starts at $0.008, with an automatic refund if no SMS arrives. It calls its products "virtual numbers" and does not state whether they are real-SIM, so check that for strict apps. It also says it does not support outgoing SMS or calls and is for lawful use only. We compare it directly in NumberOTP vs 5sim.
6. HeroSMS: big catalog, low listed prices, crypto top-up
HeroSMS says it covers 180+ countries and 700+ sites, lists some services from $0.006 and WhatsApp from $0.0658, and offers an API. Its own blog states that it acquired the technical infrastructure of SMS-Activate, which closed in late 2025, and that its supplier networks span the same countries. It is upfront that it does not guarantee successful registration, and that top-ups are in cryptocurrency. It also markets bulk account creation, which many apps prohibit, so use any such service only within each app's rules.
7. SMSPVA: mixed real-SIM and virtual numbers
SMSPVA offers both real SIM-based and virtual numbers across 60+ countries and 200+ platforms, from $0.05 per number, with a REST API. It claims a 99% delivery success rate for real SIM numbers, which we could not verify. Its homepage does not state a refund policy.
8. GrizzlySMS: huge catalog, very wide price range
GrizzlySMS lists 2,470+ services across 200+ countries and an API. Its listed starting prices range from $0.092 for Indonesia to $75 for Singapore, with the USA from $1, which shows how much price depends on country. Its homepage does not state a refund policy or whether numbers are real-SIM.
9. Quackr: free VoIP numbers or paid non-VoIP rentals
Quackr splits its offer clearly: free temporary numbers that it describes as VoIP and rotates, and paid dedicated non-VoIP numbers rented for 1 week up to 12 months. It lists 30+ countries beyond the main ones, an API and an MCP server for AI agents on paid plans. Prices were not displayed on the page we read.
10. Temp-Number: free shared numbers for low-stakes tests
Temp-Number is a free site where anyone can read messages sent to shared public numbers, with no registration. It claims 50+ countries and says messages are deleted after 7 days. Because the numbers are shared, they are a poor fit for any account you care about. We explain why in why free virtual numbers often fail.
What Happened to SMS-Activate?
SMS-Activate closed permanently in late 2025, according to HeroSMS's own account, and recommended HeroSMS as its successor. HeroSMS says it bought the technical infrastructure, not the company, that new users must register fresh, and that any site still claiming to be SMS-Activate is a scam. Our guide to SMS-Activate alternatives covers what to look for in a replacement.
How to Choose the Right One
Match the service to the stakes of the account, not to the lowest sticker price.
- One-off sign-up on a strict app: choose a real-SIM or non-VoIP number with a refund if no SMS arrives. Our guide to VoIP vs real phone numbers explains why.
- Account you will need again: rent a number so you can get the next code. See how renting a virtual number works.
- Testing an app you build: use a service with a documented API and rentals, and read how developers test SMS OTP flows.
- Lowest cost: compare the full price for your country and app, because listed "from" prices vary widely. We break down the drivers in why SMS verification costs so much.
- A throwaway test with nothing at stake: a free shared number is fine.
Red Flags in Any Provider
Be careful with any service that hides the details that decide whether you get a working code. Watch for these.
- No stated refund policy for numbers that never receive an SMS.
- Success-rate percentages with no method or date.
- Prices that only appear after you add funds.
- Shared numbers presented as private.
- Marketing built around creating accounts in bulk, which many apps prohibit.
Use virtual numbers for legitimate personal verification, privacy and testing, and follow each app's terms. For a deeper look at cost-focused options, see our comparison of cheap OTP services and their trade-offs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best virtual number service for OTP verification?
It depends on the job. For real-SIM numbers across many countries, NumberOTP is our pick. For US-only numbers on strict apps, TextVerified. For testing and team use, SMSPool. For a free trial first, OnlineSIM. For the lowest listed prices and biggest catalogs, 5sim or HeroSMS.
Do I need a real-SIM number for OTP verification?
For strict apps such as messaging and social platforms, a real-SIM or non-VoIP number is much safer, because apps can classify numbers by line type. For low-stakes sign-ups that do not check, a cheaper virtual number can work. Test with one request, and check the provider's refund terms first.
Are free OTP numbers safe to use?
Not for anything important. Free public numbers are shared, so anyone can read the messages sent to them, and many apps reject numbers that many people have used. They are fine for a throwaway test, but a private number is the safer choice for any account you plan to keep.
Why do OTP number prices differ so much between services?
Prices depend on the country, the app, the type of number and how the provider sources it. Listed starting prices in this article run from $0.006 (HeroSMS, some services) to $0.25 (TextVerified US lines), and GrizzlySMS lists up to $75 for a single country. Always compare the full price for your own app and country.
What happened to SMS-Activate?
SMS-Activate closed permanently in late 2025. HeroSMS says SMS-Activate recommended it as the successor and that it acquired the technical infrastructure rather than the company. New users must register fresh, and HeroSMS warns that any site still claiming to be SMS-Activate is a scam.
