Why SMS Verification Costs So Much: 2026 Price Data

Why does SMS verification cost so much? See what carriers and OTP platforms really charge in 2026, why fraud inflates bills, and how to pay less.

SMS verification cost looks high mainly because the price of sending one text is only the start. In the US a single message costs under a cent to send, but the same code can cost around ten times more in India, and platform fees, registration charges and fraud push the real price per verified user far above the headline rate. This guide shows the actual published numbers, so you can see where the money goes.

We run NumberOTP, which sells numbers for receiving codes, so we also explain what that means if you are the one buying a number. Prices below come from Twilio's own pricing pages and from sources we name, and they change often, so check the date next to each figure.

What One Verification Text Actually Costs

A single SMS is cheap in the US and noticeably more expensive elsewhere. Twilio's US pricing page, current as of September 2026, lists a base rate of $0.0083 per message segment, with carrier surcharges on top.

Cost itemPublished figureSource
US base rate, per message segment$0.0083Twilio US pricing, September 2026
US carrier surcharge, outbound$0.0035 (AT&T), $0.0045 (T-Mobile), $0.005 (Verizon and US Cellular)Twilio US pricing, September 2026
India, per message, international number route$0.0832Twilio India pricing, no date shown
Managed verification service, per successful check$0.05, plus the SMS chargeReported by Authgear, July 2026

Read together, a US code costs roughly one to two cents to send once carrier fees are added, while a managed verification product can add several cents more per successful check. For a business sending millions of codes, that difference is the bill.

Why the Price Differs by Country and Carrier

Twilio says SMS pricing "is based on the destination and type of message," and on the carrier receiving it. That is why one network can cost more than another within the same country, and why the same app can pay very different amounts for codes sent to different regions.

The comparison above also shows how large the gap can be: Twilio's India figure of $0.0832 per message is about ten times its US base rate. Other sources quote different India numbers, depending on the route and sender type, so treat any single country price as a snapshot of one route, not a universal rate.

The Add-Ons That Raise the Real Cost

Beyond the per-message rate, businesses pay for registration, platforms and failures. Each layer is small on its own, but together they explain why effective cost per verified user is higher than the headline price.

  • Registration fees: Twilio notes that US A2P 10DLC traffic carries registration onboarding fees, which it passes through to customers.
  • Platform markup: managed verification services bundle fraud tooling and retries, and charge per successful check on top of the message cost.
  • Failed-message charges: Twilio's India page lists a $0.001 fee for messages with a failed status, so a message that fails can still carry a charge.
  • Retries: each time a user taps "resend," the app generally sends, and pays for, another message.

How Fraud Inflates the Bill

SMS pumping is a major hidden cost driver for apps, and it is one reason many apps limit how often you can request a code. In this scheme, fraudsters use bots to submit fake phone numbers at scale through sign-up and OTP forms, and the business pays for every message sent to them.

Twilio says its Verify Fraud Guard saved customers $62.7 million between June 2022 and October 2024 and protected them from more than 569 million fraud attempts. You can read the explanation in Twilio's guide to SMS pumping fraud. The same pressure is one reason apps check whether a number is a real mobile line, which we cover in our guide to VoIP vs real phone numbers.

What This Means When You Buy a Number to Receive Codes

If you buy a number to receive a code, your price depends on the country, the app and how hard that number is to supply, not on what the app pays to send. We can only speak for our own pricing: it varies by service and country, and our pricing page lists popular combinations such as Google plus India at roughly $0.10 to $0.30 per activation. We cannot see other providers' costs, so we do not compare them here.

What you can compare is how a provider charges. A pay-per-attempt model charges even when no code arrives. A model that refunds the activation when no SMS arrives, as NumberOTP does, means you pay for results. Our longer look at what cheap OTP services really cost goes into the trade-offs.

How to Pay Less for Verification Codes

You pay less by avoiding wasted attempts, not by hunting for the lowest sticker price. These steps help in practice.

  • Choose refund-on-failure: a refunded failed attempt is effectively free, while a non-refunded one is a loss.
  • Do not spam resend: each request can cost the app money, which is why apps cool you down, and rapid retries can cancel the code you are waiting for.
  • Use a private real-SIM number: free shared numbers are cheap but often rejected, which wastes time. See why free virtual numbers often fail.
  • Rent if you need the number again: repeated one-off activations add up, so renting a virtual number can be cheaper for an account you will keep.
  • Check the price before you confirm: look at the exact figure for your app and country on the services page.

Why Some Apps Are Moving Away From SMS Codes

Because every text has a cost and a fraud risk, many businesses add authenticator apps and passkeys, which cost almost nothing per login. Authgear's two-factor authentication cost guide describes authenticator codes as near-zero marginal cost and passkeys as free to send. For you, that means more apps will offer a non-SMS option, but SMS codes remain the default for sign-up in many places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sending an OTP text expensive?

Not in the US, where Twilio lists a base rate of $0.0083 per message segment plus a carrier surcharge of a few tenths of a cent. It can cost much more in other countries, and platform fees and fraud raise the effective price per verified user well above the headline rate.

Why do SMS prices vary so much by country?

Prices depend on the destination, the carrier receiving the message and the route used. Twilio states this on its own pricing pages. As an example, its India rate of $0.0832 per message is about ten times its US base rate, which shows how wide the gap can be.

What is SMS pumping fraud?

It is a scheme where bots submit fake phone numbers to sign-up or verification forms at scale, so the business pays for every message sent to them. Twilio says attacks can be sudden or spread slowly over days or weeks. It is a main reason apps rate-limit code requests.

Why does an OTP number cost more than a free number?

A free public number is shared by many people, so it is often already registered or blocked, and everyone can read its codes. A private real-SIM number is reserved for you for the activation, so you are paying for a code that arrives and for privacy.

Do I pay if the verification code never arrives?

That depends on the provider, and it is worth checking before you buy. Some charge per attempt even when nothing arrives. With NumberOTP, if an activation expires without receiving an SMS, your credit is refunded automatically, so a failed attempt does not cost you anything.

Pay for Codes That Arrive

If you need a number to receive a code, a private real-SIM number with refund-on-failure keeps your cost tied to results. See the exact price for your app and country on our pricing page, or create a free account and use your starting credit on a first activation. Need a one-off option? Our guide to temporary numbers for OTP covers the choices.
